US Power Markets Internship

Do you have strong analytical skills and an interest in energy markets, trading, and price formation? Are you curious about how U.S. power markets work, why day-ahead and real-time prices diverge, and how data-driven models can help identify market opportunities? Then an internship as a US Power Markets Intern at Northpool could be a strong fit for you.

Grasp the opportunity

U.S. power markets are complex, fast-moving, and increasingly shaped by volatility. Weather, load, renewable generation, congestion, fuel prices, outages, and market design can all influence how prices form across day-ahead and real-time markets. These dynamics create both risk and opportunity for market participants who can understand, model, and anticipate price movements.

As a US Power Markets Intern, you will contribute to analytical and modeling projects that support our understanding of U.S. power price dynamics. Your work may involve researching market drivers, analyzing day-ahead and real-time price behavior, improving forecasting models, validating trading signals, and developing tools that help traders and analysts make better-informed decisions.

You will learn by working on real market questions and will be involved in the full analytical process: from understanding market fundamentals and formulating hypotheses to working with data, developing models, testing results, and presenting insights. During your internship, you will work closely with traders, analysts, and quants, gaining exposure to how models and market views are used in practice.

Your challenge? Make a concrete impact by helping improve our understanding of U.S. power markets and contributing to robust models, forecasts, and analytical tools used by the trading team.

As an intern, you will first learn about Northpool’s markets, data, tools, and modeling approach. You will then work on your own project related to U.S. power markets and price modeling. This could include analyzing price spreads, identifying drivers of extreme market moves, improving forecasting signals, or building practical tools to support trading decisions. You will be encouraged to implement ideas in a structured, reliable, and commercially relevant way.
